The National Bookstart Programme Print E-mail

Bookstart is a national programme that encourages parents to share and enjoy books with their children from as early an age as possible. Their aim is for “every child in the UK to develop a lifelong love of books.” Research has shown that sharing books with babies and toddlers is a wonderful way to increase language skills and help them understand the world around them and it is also important for their future education as the Bookstart website claims, “Babies and toddlers who love books begin reading sooner and have a better start at school.”

Bookstart currently provides 3 packs for children up to the age of 4. Every pack contains books for the child and guidance on book selection and reading for parents.

  1. Bookstart pack for babies for children aged 0-12 months. These are usually given out by health visitors to babies at around 7 to 9 months so most parents receive this one. Ask if you haven’t received yours.

  2. Bookstart + for toddlers aged 18 – 30months. This pack is given in a “grown up” school bag which is ideal for children starting nursery school. As well as free books and information for parents this pack includes crayons and a colouring book. Health visitors often distribute these packs but if you haven’t received one ask your local nursery or library.
  3. Treasure Chest for children aged 36 – 48 months. Not only does this pack come in a great treasure chest which has a secret compartment it also includes colouring pencils, sharpener and a colouring pad. The information and advice for parents is also very informative and well worth reading. If your child’s nursery does not distribute these packs don’t forget to collect one from your local library.
